Description

Tension between Lebanon's Sunni Muslim political leadership, headed by caretaker Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, and the Shiite political leadership represented by the militant Hizbullah group and the moderate Amal Movement led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, is mounting, threatening to plunge Lebanon into a new bout of sectarian violence. In fact, tension between leaders of the two major Muslim sects has been building up since last year over the UN -backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which is investigating the 2005 assassination of Hariri's father, former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. The STL is expected to hand down its indictment soon amid wide expectations that some Hizbullah members will be implicated in the massive bombing that killed Hariri and 22 others in Beirut on Feb. 14, 2005. Hizbullah has repeatedly denied involvement in the assassination. The controversial STL has sharply divided the Lebanese into two rival camps. While Hariri and his allies in the Western-backed March 14 coalition have upheld the STL as the best means to reveal the truth behind his father's assassination, Hizbullah and its March 8 allies have publicly called for the abolition of the tribunal, dismissing it as "an American-Israeli tool" designed to stir up sectarian strife in Lebanon.
